Christmas is a joyful celebration with snow, gifts, carols and good words for your friends and kin. We advise you to have a closer look at what is created around us by locals so as not to waste time or get lost amid supermarket shelves when looking for suitable presents for our dearest ones.
It is the third year running that the Society of Kandava Craftsmen in collaboration with Kandava Commission of Culture is setting up a unique market show Christmas Gift Fair. The market will offer over 3000 singular handmade designs of top quality. The Christmas Gift Fair will take place in the art gallery of Kandava province museum. Kandava dwarfs will help you assemble and wrap the presents. Tallinn Town Hall in 2015: a unique exhibition of European Old Masters artworks.

In summer 2015 the art will dominate in Tallinn Town Hall. The working title of the exhibition is “Art Rules”.
From the beginning of June to the beginning of October 2015, Tallinn Town Hall has the privilege of hosting a unique exhibition of European Old Masters artworks from the 15th-17th century. The exhibition includes original artworks by such masters as Peter Paul Rubens, Pieter Bruegel, Lucas Cranach, Hieronymus Bosch, Albrecht Dürer etc., as well as the world-famous Michel Sittow from Tallinn. Never before have masterpieces of this quality and amount – more than 80 paintings – been presented in Estonia or Estonian neighbouring countries (apart from the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg).
The artworks come from private collections from all over the world, but most of them belong to a Swiss-based art investment company.
The exhibition covers the whole town hall and changes temporarily the appearance of town hall interiors. Temporary partition walls will be built in order to display the paintings (even in the Citizens Hall and the Council Chamber), thus leaving less space for visitors in the halls. Most of the seats will be removed - only 20 seats will remain in the Citizens’ Hall (the Great Hall). Consequently, the maximum group size which can be allowed is 20 people.
The exhibition will be opened from 5 June 2015 to 5 October 2015 every day 9.30-17.30 (last admission at 17.00).
The exhibition is unique and the ticket prices reflect this. The entrance fee is 14 €, reduced ticket for pupils and students 6 €.

The best restaurant of Estonia in 2014: Noa restaurant

On October 29, the rankings of the Moet&Chandon TOP 50 best restaurants in Estonia were announced in Tallink Conference and Spa Hotel. The best restaurant this year is restaurant Noa's Head Chef's Side.
The restaurant was followed by Alexander, Horisont, Tchikovsky and Põhjaka. Previously, restaurant Ö has gained the top rank twice, and restaurant Alexander has had the honour four times. The top 5 candidates were deemed equal in food quality, the deciding factors this year were points given for drinks, service, and ambience. By the initiative of Tallink Hotels, the best server of drinks was also announced. Of the three nominees (Dominic, Leib Resto ja Aed, Ribe), restaurant Ribe was named the winner. By the initiative of Dansukker, the best dessert server was also named. Of the five nominees (Cru, Lime Lounge, Noa, Põhjaka, Tchaikovsky), the winner was restaurant Tchaikovsky. „Food is gradually becoming a larger motivator for people to come to Estonia and travel within the country. There is a sufficient amount of information about different restaurants and people go out to eat with concrete expectations every time. The restaurant experience is created by a combination of food, drink, service and the restaurant's ambence. None of these four is more, or less important than the other. This why it is of significant importance that this year the winner was not decided by the food, but the three other criteria,” says Aivar Hanson, the head of Flavours of Estonia.
The best restaurants were ranked for the seventh consecutive year. The jury is made up of 30 food critics, 12 of whom are from Estonia and 18 are from abroad. Flavours of Estonia is a programme started in 2008 that introduces Estonia as a country of good food.

Largest travel guide book publisher in the world, Lonely Planet, named Lithuania the third best tourist destination for 2015. Lithuania was surpassed by Singapore, the number one, and Namibia. One of the reasons for the high rating was the introduction of the Euro in Lithuania.

It also emphasizes that Lithuania is a modern country, where one can easily find ATM machines and pay for goods and services electronically.
Among the reasons for visiting Lithuania Lonely Planet puts the Curonian Spit and the baroque old town of Vilnius.

The head organizer Jüri Makarov added that they may sign more artists as some negotiations are still taking place.
The orginizers took heat after announcing the event at the beginning of February without revealing any headliners, while still asking 50 euros for tickets. The price of a ticket to the two-day festival will cost 60 euros from Friday and 90 euros in June.
The original three-day festival was subtitled “Glasnost Rock - Rock for Peace!" and was held during a time of increasing defiance against Soviet rule. The free event in 1988 attracted 190,000 people.
Rock Summer was then repeated nearly every year for the following decade, attracting names like Iggy Pop and Shaggy to what was otherwise a backwater of the international music circuit. The last time it was held was 1997, after which the organizers went bankrupt.
Rock Summer 25 will be held at the Tallinn Song Festival Grounds on June 15 and 16.

International sleddog race is going to take place on 26-27.01 in Otepaa, Estonia.

An international sleddog race "Jalg 2013" is going to take place on 26-27.01.2013 in Tehvandi Sport Centre, Otepaa. It is a big event in sled dog sport since there hasn't been in such a large scale race in Estonia before, as well as hopefully a beginning of a nice tradition in Otepaa.
Estonia is waiting competitors from Latvia, Lithuania, Russia as well as from Finland and of course Estonia's own racers are on the trail as well.
There are two major classes: skiing classes and sledding classes. The skiing classes have men and women separated and there is a difference whether the skier is pulled by one or two dogs. No gender separation in sledding classes and there are 2-12 dogs pulling the sled.
The distances will be driven through one time in both race days. Start and finish is in Tehvandi stadium area.
Apart the sprint distances (8 and 12 km) there is a mid-distance trail (43 km) the first time in Estonia that involves Tartu Marathon trail and Kekkose trail parts and passes through the beautiful southern Estonian hill country nature.
In the stadium area, visitors can meet the dogs as well as the professional sleddog sportsmen and spend a winsome weekend together.

Optionally we offer 5 days dogsledding expedition in South-Estonian National park. Please contact us for more information: info@baltictour.com.

Lithuania celebrates 90 years since recovery of Klaipeda, its "Window to the West".

As Lithuania marks 90 years since the recovery of Klaipeda Region in 2013, historian Algimantas Kasparavicius says it almost impossible to overestimate this move. Following a staged revolt which led to the recovery of Klaipeda, he says, Lithuania was turned back to the West, gained the status of a maritime state, and was inspired for a long battle with Poland for Vilnius.
"The return of Lithuanians to Klaipeda after a break of 500 years, in the civilization terms, meant for Lithuania the same as the Unification of Germany for Berlin, the incorporation of Bavaria into the State of Germany or the defeat of the Swedes and the establishment of Saint Petersburg for Russia," the historian said in an interview to BNS.
Sunday marks 90 years since the Supreme Committee for the Salvation of Lithuania Minor was set up. Three days later, it asked Lithuania to come to rescue, and on 9 January, a thousand of volunteers from Lithuania, dressed as civilians, crossed the border.
Kaunas called this move a local revolt, and on 24 January the Seimas of Lithuania satisfied the Committee's request on the incorporation of Klaipeda Region. Until then, under the Treaty of Versailles, Klaipeda was put under a French administration. Soon afterwards, the Conference of Ambassadors recognized Klaipeda as an autonomous region within Lithuania which led to the mood of triumph across Lithuania. Kasparavicius notes that it’s no secret today that the Klaipeda Revolt was in fact organized in Kaunas and that around 70 percent of rebels were riflemen, students, volunteers, or simply civil-dressed troops from Lithuania proper, and that this Lithuanian revolt was pre-coordinated via diplomatic channels with Berlin and Moscow.
"It is understandable that the whole situation was fabricated and it was clear for European political leaders: nobody ever believed this legend of the Klaipėda Revolt. And diplomatic protests were weak and were rather a décor. Strong protests came only from Poland but the county was restrained by the Kremlin factor, and the Western allies were afraid to spark another war," the historian said.
In his opinion, the Lithuanian government's moves to recover Klaipeda can today be evaluated "only positively."
"Without the recovery of Klaipeda, interwar Lithuania's economic progress would have been impossible. Without Klaipeda, Lithuania's political-diplomatic struggle for Vilnius would have been practically doomed. And without Vilnius and Klaipeda, Lithuania's statehood remains only an ideological chimera. Besides, the march to Klaipeda was important for the Lithuanians psychologically as it showed that Lithuania can compete with Poland in certain areas, and that inspired them for a long battle for Vilnius," Kasparavicius said.
Based on the 1925 census data from Klaipeda Region, 141,000 people lived in the region at the time, including 64,000 Germans, 37,000 Lithuanians, and 34,000 "Klaipeda residents" who spoke Lithuanian at home.
Kasparavicius says that within the next 15 years, the volume of international shipping in Klaipeda more than doubled from 700 ships in 1923 to 1,550 ships in 1938, and cargo turnover rose more than four times, with almost 80 percent of Lithuania's total foreign trade going via Klaipeda in 1938. "We can say that the Lithuanians put a major part of their energy, money, and hopes into Klaipeda in 1923-1938," Kasparavicius said.
Klaipeda now has a population of 162,000, including 74 percent of Lithuanians and 20 percent of Russians, according to the 2011 census data.
Last year, the Seimas of Lithuania declared 2013 the Year of Recovery of Klaipeda Region.

Riga will become the cultural epicentre of Europe - European Capital of Culture 2014!

Riga is already a venue for cultural events on an international scale, but in 2014 it will become the cultural epicentre of Europe. During its year as European Capital of Culture, hundreds of special events will take place - culture in the very broadest sense. 365 days a year, with a new understanding of culture as a positive force of change in people's lives. This year, cultural personalities are already warming up for Riga as European Capital of Culture 2014 with a variety of interesting events.
In 2014 travellers will have an important additional reason to visit Riga, since the heart of Latvia has been chosen the European Capital of Culture and is going to entertain its guests with innumerable events dedicated to this fact.
Riga has given many pearls to the culture of Europe and the world – the most important include the Old Riga, Art Nouveau, and wooden architecture.
An elusive value is the multicultural environment that has been characteristic from the very beginning, since people of many various nationalities have lived in Riga together – the Latvians, Germans, Russians, Poles, Swedes, Finns and others. This variety through Johann Gottfried Herder and Immanuel Kant has played an important role in development of the German Enlightenment Philosophy, has been the cradle for the cinema genius Sergey Eisenstein, philosopher Isaiah Berlin and an asylum for the opera grand Richard Wagner, and for centuries has been a source of inspiration for a range of other famous European people. During 2014 everyone will be able to become acquainted with works and contributions of these personalities, as well as evaluate the marks on the modern Latvian music, fine arts, cinema and pop culture, as museums and other depositories will prepare special exhibitions and shows for this event trying to outclass one another in diversity to attract attention of the interested persons.
Guests of Riga will be able to enjoy pearls of music performed by the world-renowned Latvian choirs, magnificent opera staging, modern art performances, popular music concerts, art exhibitions, grand national celebrations and many more events, which the guests can take part in.
