Capital city: Riga

Location: Latvia is located in North-Eastern Europe, bordering the Baltic Sea, between Estonia and Lithuania, and border with Russia on the East. The capital city Riga is located on the banks of the Daugava River, 20 km from the Baltic Sea coast, at 56’’58’ N and 14’’12’ E. Distances: to Helsinki 360 km, to Berlin 840 km, to Moscow 960 km.

Population: 2 306 306 (July 2004), mainly Latvian and Russian nationalities and smaller communities of people from Belarus, Ukraine and Poland.

Language: Latvian, an Indo-European, non-Slavic and non-Germanic language, similar only to the Lithuanian language. Russian, English and German are widely spoken.

Religion: Predominantly Protestant (Lutheran) with a Roman Catholic minority and a large Russian orthodox community.

Opening hours: Banking hours Monday-Friday 09.00AM-04.00PM, Saturday: 09.00AM- 00.30PM. Shops are open Monday-Friday 09.00AM-07.00PM and Saturday 09.00AM- 04.00PM. A number of supermarkets and exchange offices are operating around the clock.

Telephone: IDD systems are available at all hotels. Telephone cards are used in telephone automates; GSM and MNT net are in wide operation.

Electricity: 220 volts AC, 50 hertz, European-style 2-pin plugs are in use.

Taxi: Taxis outside up-market hotels charge according to the meter. Private taxis needed to be agreed upon the fare in advance.

Visa: is not required by most nationalities or it can be obtained upon arrival at Riga Airport.

Tax free: Tax free purchase is available in the airport upon departure. The shops have a reasonable choice of goods. Most goods are fairly priced.

Airport: Riga Airport is situated 8 km from the city center. The airport has the capacity to receive large aircrafts.
