Capital city: Vilnius

Location: North-Eastern Europe, bordering the Baltic Sea, between Latvia and Russia, also borders with Poland and Belarus. The capital city Vilnius is located on the banks of the Neris River, 300 km from the Baltic Sea, at 54''N and 25'' E. Distances: to Helsinki 720 km, to Berlin 850 km, to Moscow 830 km.

Population: 3,412,800 (September 2005)

Inhabitants of Vilnius: 541.278, mainly Lithuanians (52,8%), Poles (19,2%) and Russians (19,1%) and Byelorussians (4,8 %), Jews (0,7%), others (3,4%).

Language: Lithuanian, an Indo-European, non-Slavic and non-Germanic language, similar only to the Latvian language. Russian, English and German are widely spoken.

Religion: Predominantly Roman Catholic, also Evangelical Lutheran and Russian Orthodox communities.

Banking hours Monday-Friday 09.00AM-04.00PM, Saturday: 09.00AM- 00.30PM. Shops are open Monday-Friday 09.00AM-07.00PM and Saturday 09.00AM- 04.00PM. A number of supermarkets and exchange offices are operating around the clock.

IDD system is available at all hotels. Telephone cards are used in telephone automates; GSM and MNT net are in wide operation.

Electricity: 220 volts AC, 50 hertz, European-style 2-pin plugs are in use.

Taxi: Taxis outside up-market hotels charge according to the meter. Private taxis needed to be agreed upon the fare in advance.

Visa: is not required by most nationalities or it can be obtained upon arrival at Vilnius Airport.

Tax-free: Tax-free purchase is available in the airport upon departure. The shops have a reasonable choice of goods. Most goods are fairly priced.

Vilnius Airport is situated 6 km from the city center. The airport has the capacity to receive large aircrafts.
